The journey continues...
One of the most unexpected discoveries during our time in Butuceni Village wasn't the historic home, the handcrafted artefacts, or even the breathtaking views surrounding Orheiul Vechi. It was just how familiar everything felt. As we walked through the Craftsmen's House Museum, learning about how Moldovan families lived, worked, cooked, built their homes, and passed down traditions from one generation to the next, we couldn't help but be reminded of home. Despite being separated by thousands of kilometres, there were so many similarities between life in rural Moldova and life in many parts of Kenya.
The more we explored, the more we realised that people are often far more alike than they are different. The importance of family, the pride in craftsmanship, the passing down of traditions, the connection to the land, the warmth shown to visitors, and the deep respect for community all felt strikingly familiar. While the language, architecture, and landscapes may differ, the values at the heart of everyday life felt remarkably the same. Through this experience, Moldova became more than a country we were visiting. It became a reminder that across cultures, continents, and generations, there is far more that connects us than separates us.
