Abandoned Convent of São Francisco De Portimão in Algarve, Portugal

Portugal has an abundance of great explores, ranging from beautiful villas and hotels, to medieval convents. I visited the Convent of São Francisco in Portimao in 2019, and found it to be a particularly poignant space. The land it's built upon has been donated in 1530 by Governor Simão Correia, the captain of the Moroccan town of Azamor during the short Portuguese presence there, to thank God for his protection at a time of nearly constant warfare. Built in 1541, it must have looked humongous compared to other local buildings in older times, perhaps one of the grander building complexes in Portimao during its heyday.
.
Today, the crumbling grand convent is occupied by the destitute of Portimao, who have been very friendly during my clandestine visit.
