É sede do município de São Brás de Alportel com 153,37 km² de área e 11 266 habitantes (censo de 2021), sendo um dos seis municípios de Portugal com uma única freguesia,correspondente à totalidade do território do município. É limitado a norte e leste pelo município de Tavira, a sudeste por Olhão, a sul por Faro e a oeste por Loulé.
Pertence à rede das Cidades Cittaslow.
O monumento de homenagem à 1.ª Travessia Aérea do Atlântico Sul foi inaugurado aquando a celebração do 95.º aniversário da partida do piloto Sacadura Cabral e do navegador Gago Coutinho (com raízes familiares são-brasenses).
A viagem iniciou no dia 30 de março e terminou no dia 17 de junho de 1922, com a chegada ao Rio de Janeiro, no Brasil.
Uma obra de arte imponente, que respeita as dimensões reais do hidroavião original, com uma altura de 3,7 metros e 14 metros de envergadura, e que dignifica a História de São Brás de Alportel e de Portugal, relembrando para o futuro o feito histórico de dois heróis nacionais, Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral, com a primeira travessia aérea do Atlântico Sul.
Esta obra de arte, de autoria de Carlos de Oliveira Correia está instalada no Jardim das 8 Municipais Cobertas.



São Brás de Alportel is a Portuguese village in the district of Faro , region and sub-region of the Algarve.
It is the seat of the municipality of São Brás de Alportel with an area of ​​153.37 km² and 11,266 inhabitants (2021 census),being one of the six municipalities in Portugal with a single parish,corresponding to the totality of of the territory of the municipality. It is limited to the north and east by the municipality of Tavira , to the southeast by Olhão , to the south by Faro and to the west by Loulé .

The monument in honor of the 1st Air Crossing of the South Atlantic was inaugurated on the occasion of the celebration of the 95th anniversary of the departure of pilot Sacadura Cabral and navigator Gago Coutinho (with family roots from São Paulo).
