It lies in the clear blue waters of the Eastern Mediterranean, just 40 miles off the coast of Turkey, 60 miles from Syria and 250 miles from Egypt. After Sicily and Sardinia, it is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. North Cyprus provides a most hospitable welcome, with its friendly people, and its beautiful natural attractions, unspoilt, unpolluted and uncrowded. With miles of coastline and golden sands bathed in sunshine almost every day of the year. There is much of historical interest to reflect nine thousand years of history. Gothic churches rub shoulders with crusader castles, and ruined temples with British Colonial architecture in a fascinating blend of styles. The all-pervading sense of the past adds to the enchantment of the present to make an unforgettable holiday.

The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) was formed on 15th November 1983. It is a parliamentary democracy under the current Presidency of Mehmet Ali Talat. It covers an area of 3355 sq km and has a population of just over 256000, predominantly Turkish-speaking though English is widely used in the main cities and resorts. The currency is Turkish Lira. Because of the commercial importance of its geographical situation in the Mediterranean, the island of Cyprus has, throughout history, been subject to colonisation. It was occupied consecutively by Egyptians, Hittites, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Romanians, Byzantines, Lusignians, Venetians and, finally in 1571, Turks. In 1878 the island was rented to Britain and in 1923, as part of the Peace Treaty of Lausanne, Turkey accepted the annexation of the island to Britain who, 1925, pronounced it a Crown Colony. As a result of differences between the Greek and the Turkish, a Republic of Cyprus was created in August 1960; Britain, Greece and Turkey were guarantors of its independence. In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup attempted to annex the island to Greece triggered an invasion by Turkey and the Turkish Government despatched a military force to the Island. However, the subsequent conflicts between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots resulted in a military stalemate, and in November 1983 the division of the island was formalised by the creation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Cyprus is an island of legends with a rich and dramatic history, dating back thousands of years. In Cyprus the sun seems to shine all year round; even in winter when the temperatures drop, the skies are blue and cloudless and the air pleasantly warm. In summer, when temperatures soar, visitors can escape to the cooler, forested slopes of the Troodos Mountains or simply cool down in the crystal clear waters that surround the shores. Fascinating evidence of the past 3000 years has survived in Cyprus, much of it along the south coast that stretches from Paphos to Larnaca.
