The Capelinhos volcano resulting from an eruption that took place between 1957 and 58. The eruption began in the sea, next to the Ilhéus dos Capelinhos, originating violent explosions. The expelled materials fell next to the caldera, forming a small island connected to Faial Island. From that time it lost its submarine characteristics.
The lighthouse and several of the houses destroyed by the eruption accentuate the dramatic characteristic of a truly unique landscape in the Azores.

O Vulcão dos Capelinhos, que esteve em actividade entre 1957 e 58. Teve início no mar, junto aos Ilhéus dos Capelinhos, dando origem a violentas explosões. Os materiais expelidos acumularam-se junto da chaminé, formando uma ilhota que se ligou à Ilha do Faial. A partir de então perdeu as suas características submarinas.
O farol e algumas casas destruídas pela erupção acentuam o carácter dramático de uma paisagem verdadeiramente única nos Açores.
