Chisinau is the capital of the Republic of Moldova and, with more than 530,000 inhabitants, also its most populous city. It is an important economic center as well as a university city and cultural center. Chisinau has an area of 120 km². Together with its surrounding area, it forms the Chisinau municipality, which covers 563.3 km² and was home to over 660,000 people in 2014. The city is Moldova's main industrial and commercial center, and is located in the middle of the country, on the river Bac, a tributary of the Dniester. Chisinau is the most economically prosperous locality in Moldova and its largest transportation hub. Nearly a third of Moldova's population lives in the metro area.
