China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi began his first European tour since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, making his initial stop in Italy on August 25, 2020. Wang’s overtures to Europe come amid US efforts to convince other nations to shun cooperation with China. Coinciding with Wang’s first bilateral meeting in Rome, Hong Kong activist Nathan Law staged a small protest outside the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to urge Italian Foreign Affairs Minister Luigi Di Maio to raise human rights issues in the city when he meets Wang. Beijing’s top diplomat has also been pressed by Canada’s foreign minister over the arrest of two Canadian citizens in China, which has been described as a retaliation for Canada’s arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.
