First confirmed case of novel coronavirus was reported in Sri Lanka on the 27th of January as a female Chinese national was diagnosed with the deadly virus. The 47-year old Chinese woman from Hubei Province in China was admitted to the IDH in critical condition.

Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Chief Epidemiologist at the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, stated that the woman had arrived as a tourist with another group of travelers and had been screened at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for having a high fever. The rest of the travelers accompanying her had already left the country and the hotels she and her travel companions had stayed at have been identified, he added.

Recent data now puts confirmed cases of Wuhan coronavirus, provisionally known as 2019-nCov, at 11,374 [Johns Hopkins data] with 259 fatalities. Cases have been found in 27 countries with more being added by the day.

The Situation in Mainland China and Hong Kong
Hubei province, home of the city of Wuhan, remains the epicenter of the 2019-nCoV outbreak. The central Chinese city is the site of 7,153 confirmed coronavirus cases with 249 of the 259 confirmed deaths. Zhejiang, in Eastern China, south of Shanghai, is the second hardest-hit area with 537 cases.
