An evening exploring the many ways women around the world radically shaped modern photography from the 1920s to the 1950s. In conjunction with the exhibition Underexposed: Women Photographers from the High Museum, Andrea Nelson, associate curator in the department of photographs at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, will discuss her groundbreaking exhibition and book The New Woman Behind the Camera. Joined by Sarah Kennel, Donald and Marilyn Keough Family Curator of Photography, Nelson will discuss the global phenomenon of the “New Woman,” an ideal of female empowerment based on real women making revolutionary changes in life and art, especially photography.
