(3 Mar 2022) A Cairo-based Ukrainian diplomat said on Thursday that nearly 20,000 Ukrainian tourists stranded in Egypt will be flown out to other European countries soon.
Ruslan Nechai, Charge d' Affaires of Ukraine's Embassy in Cairo, said an "organised process" will kick off within the next few days to send the tourists to countries neighbouring Ukraine's western borders including Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
After they reach these countries, they will eventually be sent home, Nechai told a news conference in Cairo.
Ukrainians come second in terms of the number of European tourists that visit Egypt annually, namely its Red Sea resorts.
Citing the Ukrainian Tourism Agency, Egyptian local press reported in January that more than 1.4 million Ukrainian tourists visited Egypt in 2021.
Nechai said he understands the relationship that Egypt has with both Russia and Ukraine, but added that now was the time to take "a strong position to condemn the war".
Nechai also thanked the Egyptian government for voting in favour of the U.N. General Assembly's resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
