Orheiul Vechi’s history is layered, featuring Geto- Dacian fortresses from the 6th to 1st centuries BC, a 14th -century Golden Horde city and fortress, a 15th century Moldovian defense center under Stefan cel Mare, and still functioning 13th century Orthodox cave monasteries. Today, it’s a cultural natural reserve known for its archaeological sites, Cave monastery, a 1905 above ground church, museum in the villages of Butuceni and Trebujeni, and natural beauty along the Raut River.
