Finland, a Scandinavian nation, joined a growing number of nations on Friday in restricting entry to Russian nationals to those traveling for family, study, or employment. On September 19, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland decided to bar Russians from entering their countries. Finland followed likewise on Friday, leaving Norway's brief Arctic border with Russia as the last land access to Europe. The European Union (EU), which quickly enacted a flight embargo following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, is currently discussing whether to implement travel restrictions across the board. Putin called up 300,000 reservists on September 21, starting Russia's first mass mobilization since the Second World War.

Since then, hundreds of Russian men have tried to elude the draft by leaving the country; reports of miles-long lines at the Georgian border have been made.



In the days following the news, the cost of plane tickets soared, with certain locations apparently selling out completely, including Istanbul and Dubai. More than 50,000 people entered Finland in less than a week, according to figures from the Finnish Border Guards, which guards Finland's 830-mile border with Russia.



Due to this, the Finnish government started denying admission to Russians with EU tourist visas on Friday, thus closing the final direct land entry point for those trying to dodge conscription.



"The decision in essence aims to fully restrict Russian tourism to Finland and the corresponding transit through Finland," said foreign minister Pekka Haavisto during a press conference.



Russian immigration, according to Mr. Haavisto, is harming the nation's relations with other nations. Since Finland is one of the 26 countries that make up the passport-free Schengen region, its border serves as a doorway to nearly all of Europe.



The Russians were able to circumvent the EU flight ban thanks to a specific route through Helsinki Airport, which the Finnish official had previously expressed concern about.

The decision was also attributed to recent fraudulent Russian referendums in Ukraine and the Nord Stream pipeline leaks.



However, exceptions must be taken into account on a case-by-case basis for Russians attempting to enter the nation for reasons related to their families, their studies, or their employment. Also welcomed will be political dissidents.
