Croatia, officially known as the Republic of Croatia, is a country located in Southeast and Central Europe, along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is bordered by Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast, and Montenegro to the south. Croatia has a long and irregular coastline with more than 1,200 islands, making it one of Europe’s most scenic coastal nations. Its capital and largest city is Zagreb.
Croatia’s geography is extremely diverse. The coastal region features rocky beaches, turquoise waters, and Mediterranean climate, while the interior consists of fertile plains, rivers, forests, and mountain ranges such as the Dinaric Alps.
Historically, Croatia has been influenced by many civilizations, including the Illyrians, Romans, Venetians, Ottomans, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the Middle Ages, Croatia emerged as a kingdom before later forming unions with Hungary and Austria. In the 20th century, Croatia became part of Yugoslavia, and after a period of conflict in the early 1990s, it declared independence in 1991.
The culture of Croatia reflects a blend of Central European, Mediterranean, and Balkan influences. Traditional music, dance, and folklore remain important, and Croatian cuisine varies by region—featuring seafood, olive oil, and Mediterranean flavors along the coast, while inland regions are known for meats, stews, and baked dishes.
Tourism is one of Croatia’s most important economic sectors. Historic cities such as Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, and Pula attract millions of visitors each year due to their ancient architecture, Roman ruins, medieval walls, and cultural festivals. Dubrovnik, often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is especially famous for its well-preserved old town and as a filming location for global television and film productions.
Croatia also has a strong presence in sports, particularly football (soccer), where the national team has achieved international success, including top finishes in FIFA World Cup tournaments. Other popular sports include basketball, handball, tennis, and water sports.
