I spent 13 hours on the Prietenia train — an old Soviet-style sleeper train running overnight between Bucharest, Romania and Chișinău, Moldova.
This isn’t your typical European train journey. The Prietenia feels like a time capsule from another era: slow, worn down, and unchanged for decades. From cramped cabins and long overnight hours to unexpected encounters and strict border controls, this was one of the most unique travel experiences I’ve had.
In this video, you’ll see what it’s really like to travel on this Soviet-era train — how we passed the time, what the conditions are like, and what happens when you cross into Moldova in the middle of the night.
