A surprisingly stunning city. It’s a city signed by it’s past but showing you also the beauty of it’s present.
We went to Krakow for a week trip in February. What we thought would be a quiet little town ended up to be an amazing city.
After arriving at the Krakow Airport we took the train and in about 30 min we where at the Glowny Station. Super easy. The old city centre lies 15 min. from the station.
The first night we went to a typical Polish restaurant called Morskie Oko. We truely enjoyed this place. It’s highly recommanded to booking a table in advanced and you should ask for a table downstairs. A lovely rustic interior with wooden tables and chairs. The food was delicious and there where also a few vegetarian options. During our meal we where entertained with some acoustic polish music.
In the Podgorze area we saw some of the remains of the old ghetto wall and the Ghetto Heroes square. A monument of 33 chairs in an open square. Another museum in this area is The under the eagle Pharmacy. It’s former owner helped the Jews as much as he could with medicinals, post and even let them have conspiracy meeting. The main museum in this area is the Oskar Schindler’s Factory Museum. It’s better to book in advanced your visit while there is a limited number of entrances and it might be full. This impressive and very emotional museum takes you back to the war times. Beginning in the 1939 they guide you through every step of this awful period. They also preserved Oskar Schindler’s office.
The Kazimierz quarter is known for it’s synagogues and Jewish restaurant. We just walked around this area to get a sense of the everyday life. If you are a foody just like us don’t miss out on a Zapiekanka. A toasted bread with various toppings such as mushrooms and cheese. Very cheap and filling. You can find different take aways at the Plac Nowy.
Don’t forget to wander around the Wawel Castle. The outside is free to visit. You can admire the cathedral and the castle. We loved the view of the Vistula. On the foot of this hill you can find “Smok”, a dragon that will spit fire.
Now let’s talk a little bit about the old town, Stare Miasto. There is just so much to see and do. All kinds of museums, lot’s of beautiful churches, shops, pubs and restaurants. We’ve heard about the beauty of the St.Mary’s Basilica. But seeing it with our own eyes, wow, it’s truly breath taking. Watching the sealing is like looking at a starry sky. Be careful of entering the right door. There is a door for those who wants to pray and one for tourists. The tourist entrance will give you access to a bigger part of the church.
There are many restaurants and places to go to eat. We adored the Pierogi. We went a few times to Pierogarnia Krakowiacy. A sort of fast food with lot’s of pierogi options and a delicious beetsoup. We also went to Kuchnia U Babci Maliny. A self-service restaurant hidden in a library. Just finding it will be an adventure. Ones you get in you’ll find this rural mountainlike interior. Very warm and cosy. Being a self-service you have to go yourself to the counter to order and to pick up. Loved the mushroom soup in a bread bowl and also the typical polish dishes where delicious.
In your trip to Krakow you can’t leave out a day trip to Auschwitz. We suggest you to take the bus that stops at the parking lot of Auschwitz itself. It takes about 45 min. Take all day to visit this site. This open-air museum is an emotional place that will hit hard on you. First you’ll do a tour of Auschwitz where you’ll see some testimonies of how they lived. Then with a shuttle bus you'll go to Auschwitz II- Birkenau. Here you’ll find the famous railway with it’s gate.
Another half day trip is Wieliczka salt mine. This underground museum will show you some amazing salt statues and a huge salt ball room. You can check out our Wieliczka video for more details. https://youtu.be/Hs_Z23TpQGY
Thank you for watching and reading ;)
