Krakow (Cracow), is one of the oldest cities in Poland. Located on the Vistula river, the town rises around the Wawel hill where probably was built the first settlement during the Stone Age. It was the official capital of Poland until 1596 and is still one of the leading centres of Polish academic, economic, cultural and artistic life, even if today the capital of Poland is Warsaw. The old town is over the world known as one of Europe's most beautiful middle age historical centre, so that it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1978. Krakow is also famous for its university, the Jagiellon University, founded in 1364, the second oldest in central Europe.
The marks of its troubled history are almost everywhere visible in the architecture of the town, both into the modern and the ancient part of it, as the city was spared from destruction during last wars, actually providing a showcase setting for many architectural styles. Starting from the royal castle on Wawel hill on the banks of Vistula river, passing across the Rynek Glòwny, known as the largest medieval square in Europe, crossing the district of Kazimierz, particularly notable for its renaissance buildings and the ancient Jewish quarter then relocated in Podgorze, where are the remains of the Jewish Ghetto wall, Krakow is a book opened onto its past. Out of the historical town, the Nowa Huta suburb, built under the Polish People’s Republic, witnesses the modern industrialization with its giant Lenin steelworks. The wonderful St. Mary’s Basilica and the Wawel Cathedral remember us that Krakow was also the home town of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, whose pontificate started in 1978 and ended in 2005. Karol Wojtyla was beatified on 2011.

Krakow is an awesome town, full of attractions, busy, intellectual, lively and romantic. All over the year its monuments, museums, typical restaurants and what else you may desire to enjoy the journey are available. It is full of accommodations, not particularly expensive and it is easy to reach. I cannot say which is the best season for the visit but personally loved to live Krakow in November as the Autumn atmosphere gives to the town a magical touch. Moreover, at the end of the month the Christmas market opens in Rynek Glowny and is a good opportunity to meet local people and feel the vibe of the city.
If you go to Krakow, don’t forget a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau Historical Museum, not so far from the town. It is mandatory!
Filmed in November 2019 with an Olympus Om-D EM5 MKII and a GoPro Hero 7. Photos are by Francesca Sparatore, shot with a Nikon D7500. For Post-production and editing, I used Cyberlink PowerDirector Suite 5.
The track “Thinking of You” is by Damiano Baldoni and is available on Free Music Archive.
