The Krasiński Garden was designed in the Baroque style and established in 1676 as part of the palace and garden complex known as the Krasiński Palace. At first, it had an area of 3.4 ha and was Warsaw's largest park until the Saski Garden was established. The garden was opened to the public in 1766 after it had been bought by the State as the seat of the Crown Treasury Commission in 1765. In the evening of 29 November 1830, the November insurgents fought a successful battle against the Volhynia Regiment on the western edge of the garden, which enabled them to capture the nearby Arsenal with all arms stored there. During World War II the area of the park was outside the Jewish ghetto. The park and the Palace suffered significant damage during the Warsaw Rising. It was where the insurgent Chrobry I Battalion, among others, fought.In the western section of the park, facing the former Nalewki Street, there is a partially preserved Baroque gate with a fragment of the original fencing. At the eastern edge there are the Krasiński Palace (presently owned by the national Library) and the Supreme Court complex (1996–1999). To the west of the park, there are the building of the Royal Arsenal, which houses the State Archaeological Museum, and the monument to the Heroes of the Battle of Monte Cassino (unveiled in 1999). The site of the pre-war Simons' Passage has a monument to the Warsaw Insurgents, unveiled in 1989.

Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie was a physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two scientific fields. She was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris in 1906.
Marie won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of the elements polonium and radium, using techniques she invented for isolating radioactive isotopes. 
Under her direction, the world's first studies were conducted into the treatment of neoplasms by the use of radioactive isotopes. In 1920 she founded the Curie Institute in Paris, and in 1932 the Curie Institute in Warsaw; both remain major centres of medical research. During World War I she developed mobile radiography units to provide X-ray services to field hospitals.
