The University of Kragujevac is the first higher education institution in modern Serbia, established in Kragujevac by the decree of Prince Milos Obrenović on July 1st, 1838.

Half of the faculties are located in Kragujevac and these are economics, medical sciences, philology and arts, law, science, and engineering.

While the other half of the faculties are located in five towns across Šumadija and Western Serbia region and these are: mechanical and civil engineering, education, teacher training, agronomy, technical sciences, and hotel management and tourism.

Some courses are taught in Serbian however there are also many courses offered in the English language.

There are five dormitories for students to live in – two in Kragujevac, and one each in Užice, Čačak, and Kraljevo, where over 1,400 students can reside for the academic year.

On campus, there are plenty of sports facilities on offer for students. There is an outdoor swimming pool complex, which contains a swimming pool for children, a swimming pool for non-swimmers, an Olympic pool, and a diving pool. There is also an indoor swimming pool, sports hall, stadium, tennis courts, basketball, and football playgrounds, and a variety of parks for students to enjoy when not studying.
