Nepal hosts an odd beauty pageant of elephants

Scribbles over bodies, eyeliners, nail polish on nails and tippy-toes walk; this is beauty pageant of earth’s biggest mammal, the elephants. The annual festival held in the tourist destination of south-west Nepal, Sauraha this year hosted the 16th edition of Elephant Festival amongst which the elephants’ beauty contest was the centre of attraction. A total of five elephants participated in the annual contest which had brought in a large number of people at the tourist hub from around the country. A jury of three marked elephants based on the cleanliness of nails, body and walking style, discipline, scribbles, and for carrying out the orders given on by the mahouts. The mahouts affectionately prepare the elephants for the show which requires a long performing a long series of procedure and preparedness. The winner of the show got a treat of delicious food items as sugarcane, banana, papaya and other varieties whereas the owner of the elephant was awarded a cash prize. The annual elephant festival of Nepal not only brings the humans closer to the Earth’s biggest terrestrial mammal but also raises awareness about animal preservation.
