Vienna, Austria is one of Europe's most enchanting cities. Whether you spend a week here, a day, or even a couple of hours between flights, a visit to its historic center is always worthwhile.

After wrapping up my time in Romania and Moldova, I began the long journey back to Canada, with extended layovers in both Vienna and Munich. Sure, I could have stayed in the comfort of my Vienna airport hotel and caught some sleep before my early morning connection to Germany the following day, but the ease, efficiency, and reward of a trip into the city was too enticing to pass up, so I boarded the train and headed into the city for one evening of sightseeing.

My short time in Vienna brought me to the gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral, the stunning domed Karlskirche, past the city's many monuments of Mozart, Goethe, and other famous musicians, poets, and artisans, towards the imposing baroque palace of the Hofburg. The only thing missing from my experience was a visit to one of the city's iconic cafes, but at least I was able to track down a wurst cart at the last minute.
