Poland: First visitors return to Auschwitz museum after coronavirus lockdown

The first visitors returned to the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum at the site of the former Nazi concentration camp near Oswiecim on Wednesday, as the memorial reopened to the public following months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At least 1,000 people reportedly booked tours on day one of the reopening, while special health precautions were in place to respect social distancing.

Visitors could be seen wearing masks and sanitising their hands at the memorial entrance, but many said they felt safe.

"It's very organised, is one of the best I've seen for weeks and months, even in our country," said a visitor from Belgium.

The memorial site and former death camp, which hosts nearly two million visitors every year, was closed in March to curb the spread of coronavirus.
