Warsaw residents packed the capital's parks to enjoy the sun as the first easing of Poland's coronavirus lockdown began on Monday.

Parks, forests, beaches and other open-air recreational areas were allowed to open from Monday, April 20, under the condition that residents keep a two-metre physical distance and wear face masks.

The measure is the first out of four steps announced by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to gradually loosen the restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The other three rounds will be introduced based on contagion statistics and the situation in the country's hospitals, Morawiecki said.

The first step came into force despite the biggest rise in COVID-19 cases the day before, with 545 new infections. As of Sunday, Poland has reported over 9,280 cases with at least 360 deaths.
