A rare, powerful earthquake struck Morocco late on Friday night, killing more than a thousand people and damaging buildings from the historic city of Marrakech to remote villages.

The epicentre of Friday's tremor, which began at 11.11pm, was in the High Atlas mountains, roughly 70km (40 miles) south of Marrakech. Officials said most of the damage occurred in hard to reach mountainous areas.
