Official figures from Brazil show a significant rise in fires in the Amazon in July compared to the same period last year.
Satellites have detected more than 6 thousand 8 hundred fires -- an increase of nearly 30 per cent.
The Amazon Environmental agency says it expects things to get worse in August and September - during the traditional “fire season".
