While Palau is one of the last 'COVID-free' countries on Earth, it has not been unaffected by the ongoing pandemic. This presentation will endeavor to describe the current climate in Palau, sharing how Palauans are already thinking about how to be more resilient both during and after Coronavirus. In particular, we will talk about some work ongoing for the Palau National Marine Sanctuary and how work is being done to empower locals to take control of the domestic pelagic fishery, for both economic diversification and food security.

Elsei Tellei is Communications and Outreach Officer at the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC). Her work centers on coordinating outreach and collaboration about science and marine conservation between various partners and stakeholders, which ranges from national partners in the Palauan government, decision makers, non-government organizations, students, community members, and regional partners across the Pacific. This includes outreach and collaboration on the Palau National Marine Sanctuary, which is Palau's national marine protected area under the administration of PICRC

This talk is part of Resilient Pacific, a seminar series brought to the public by the Center for Pacific Islands Studies and the Institute for Sustainability and Resilience at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Resilient Pacific features multidisciplinary work showcasing the many ways that Pacific communities develop their capacity to overcome a wide range of challenges. The talks highlight the diverse ways that people demonstrate resilience in forging community empowerment, innovative solutions, and sustainable futures across the Pacific and beyond toward regional and global well-being.
