Sibiu, Romania is located in the center of the country in Transylvania. It has been nicknamed “The City with Eyes” due to the unique ventilation windows in many of the rooftops of old homes that look like eyes peering out at people down below. You might feel like you’re being watched as you walk around town!

Sibiu is an absolutely gorgeous city! We loved wandering around aimlessly and finding interesting and beautiful things to see around every corner. Both the upper and lower parts of the old town are walkable and pedestrian-friendly, though the upper area of town has more to see and do.

There are several squares of various sizes in the old city center where special events are held and people gather. While we were there, a film festival and a book festival were taking place in the large and small squares.

The city has a long history with German and Hungarian influences, among others, which can be seen in the architecture, food, cultural events, and the people. Sibiu has long been an important center for trade and for craftsmen. Many areas of Sibiu are well-preserved including some medieval fortifications. The old center of Sibiu is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We’re sure no matter what time of year you visit Sibiu you won’t be disappointed. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Romania and was voted “Europe's 8th-most idyllic place to live” by Forbes in 2008. If you’ve only got time to visit a few places in Romania, we recommend adding Sibiu to your itinerary!
