Join us on our travel adventures around Spain! We rented a car from Madrid and headed out on a 2 week road trip across the country. First stop, Avila and El Escorial!

Before reaching Avila, we stopped for a visit to the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Monasterio del Escorial), or simply put: El Escorial.

El Escorial is the historical residence of the King of Spain located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, about 45 km from Madrid. El Escorial was originally built between 1563 and 1584, and is the largest Renaissance building in the world! We also enjoyed walking around Frailes Garden outside El Escorial, before heading to our next destination: Avila.

Avila is best known for its iconic medieval city walls that wrap around the entire perimeter of the Old Town. As a result, the entire Old Town of Avila, including the several number of churches and other historic sites located within, are all a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
