The European Union and Indonesia are committed to build strong bilateral relations that benefit the two entities. The relationship considerably grew after the Indonesia-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement came into effect in 2014. In 2016, the two entities launched negotiations for the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which was expected to boost trade and investment.

In 2020, the European Union was the fifth largest trading partner for Indonesia, while this archipelagic country was the 31st global trading partner for the EU. The EU investments also continue to grow and an estimated 1,100 European enterprises are operating in Indonesia today. The Indonesia-EU CEPA, which is still in the negotiation process, also aims to promote a sustainable relationship in the economic, social and environmental sectors.

However, there are a number of problems and challenges that often hamper that efforts. For instance, Indonesia’s largest export commodity to the EU, namely palm oil and its derivative products have lately become a hot issue that besets the two entities.
