The northern part of Moldova is the part of the country where you're more likely to be greeted in Russian, more likely to see the hammer and sickle, more likely to hear openly pro-communist rhetoric (and not just in a geopolitical sense, but in a very economical one too) and, up until recently, more likely to ask yourself if you haven't accidentally crossed a border.

But it's not all grim. The look and feel of the North has changed quite dramatically over the last 5 years and, at this pace, in another 5 years it will become quite difficult to find hidden gems for industrial tourism in this country.

With that said, the North is also a wound. Much like the whole Republic, but it is particularly obvious in the North and it's one of the big reasons that makes the North what it is today - for better and for worse, though mostly for worse.

In the previous episode I showed you Orhei - the unexpected political centre of the North. In this episode, we'll go through the economic centre of the area - Bălți - and then quickly through the other important towns.

As time went on, the politics of the North have become a lot more interesting and we have a lot to unpack. Depopulated several times, most recently within living memory, subjected to deportations, famine, regime change 6 times just in the last century and threatened by war more often than not... Bălți in particular and the North in general hides entire bookshelves of stories. And we'll try to go through a few of them.
