What springs to mind when you think of Europe? Probably Paris, Rome, or maybe a Greek island. You might even imagine a country like Poland or Bulgaria if you're into geography.

But most people never think of Moldova, which, according to most stats, is the poorest and least visited country in Europe. For such a tiny nation, it has an incredibly political situation: there are multiple independent or autonomous republics inside of it. It's hard to figure out what the native language is, is it Romanian/Moldovan or Russian?

This was my first visit to the country, and I knew better than anyone not to come in with preconceived notions of a place. I wanted to give the poorest country in Europe a fair shot. And so I began in Chisinau, the capital. And I would also head out to the autonomous republic of Gagauzia, a rural state that no one, and I mean literally almost no one visits.

I was in for some surprises..
