Tunisia sets up air bridge to repatriate students in Ukraine

Tunisia has started a military and civil air bridge to repatriate Tunisian citizens -- mostly students -- who were forced by the ongoing war to leave Ukraine towards Poland and Romania. The country is creating contact points on Ukrainian soil and Tunisian embassies in Poland, Romania, Moldova, and Hungary.

The announcement was made by Tunisian foreign minister Othman Jerandi after a meeting with President Kais Saied and Prime Minister Najla Bouden, reassuring Tunisian students in Ukraine and their families of the "existence of a plan" to evacuate them and repatriate those who want to return home.

Tunisia has no embassy in Ukraine, creating contact points

Tunisia does not have an embassy in Ukraine. Its plan calls for the creation of contact points on Ukrainian territory to bring together members of the Tunisian community as well as in bordering areas with the Tunisian embassies of Poland, Romania, Moldova, and Hungary, Jerandi said.

The foreign minister urged members of the community and students that want to leave Ukraine to register as soon as possible on lists of contact points across Ukraine and in Tunisian embassies in bordering countries and to call hotlines set up by the foreign ministry.

A crisis unit has been created in the ministry and the foreign ministry is in permanent contact with the Tunisian president's office to keep abreast of the latest developments in the region and the repatriation of the community as well as plans implemented for this purpose.

Contact has also been initiated with international humanitarian organizations operating in conflict zones, Jerandi said, noting that he had informed them of plans to evacuate Tunisians in Ukraine and of available routes towards Poland and Romania.

Some Tunisian students are already in Moldava, gathered together by humanitarian organizations, the minister said, noting that they will be transferred to Romania where they will be assisted by the Tunisian embassy
