The United Arab Emirates has suspended visa-free travel for Ukrainian tourists to this Middle East trade and tourism hub,
after abstaining from a U.N. Security Council resolution last week condemning the Russian invasion.
The United Arab Emirates , which hosts United States troops, has drawn closer to Russia in recent years,
partnering with it on lucrative sovereign-wealth investments and coordinating on supply to global oil markets in a deal with other key Middle East producers.
Abu Dhabi has advocated for a diplomatic solution in Ukraine, saying that taking sides would lead to more violence,
but its decision on visas appeared to penalize one party to the conflict. Ukrainian citizens, who had been eligible to stay in the United Arab Emirates for a month,
must now apply for a visa to visit, the Ukrainian Embassy said Tuesday in a Facebook post. The decision doesn’t apply to Ukrainians already in the United Arab Emirates , it said.
The are Emirati Foreign Affairs Ministry didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan spoke by phone Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin about bilateral relations and energy markets, according to the United Arab Emirates state news agency.
As Russian forces were closing in on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, Sheikh Mohammed avoided any public criticism of Moscow, emphasizing to Mr. Putin “the need for a peaceful solution to the crisis," the news agency said.
