Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It borders Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the north, and is bordered by Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west. On its southwest are Romania and Moldova while to its south and southeast are a coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The city of Kyiv doubles as the nation's capital and largest city.
Russia, known officially as the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country. It spans Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Moscow, the largest city in the country also doubles as its capital. That is a kind of similarity between Ukraine and Russia. However, Saint Petersburg is Russia's cultural capital and the country’s second-largest city. Other considerably huge urban areas in Russia are Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Kazan.
Population and Size
Ukraine is the second-largest European country in Europe. However, technically speaking, it is the largest country entirely within Europe. With a total area of 233,062 square miles out of which 3.8 percent is water, it is the 45th largest country in the world by area. Ukraine is also the 8th most populous country in Europe with a population of 36,744,636. This excludes the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. Ukraine is also the 36th most populous country in the world. Given the country’s population density of 191.1 per square mile, it is the 115th most densely populated country.
Russia is the largest country in the world by area, with its internationally recognized territory covering 6,601,670 square miles within two continents of Europe and Asia. With other claimed or acquired territories, the territory of the Russian Federation would be about 6,654,095 square miles. This is about one-eighth of Earth's inhabitable landmass. Sharing its land boundaries with 14 countries, including Ukraine, Russia extends across 11 time zones. About 13 percent of the country’s area is occupied by water and huge swamps. Russia is the world's 9th-most populous country and Europe’s most populous, with a population of over 147 million people.
Ukraine History in Brief
Ukraine has a very rich history behind it. During the Middle Ages, it was the site of early Slavic expansion. The country Ukraine likely derives its name from the old Slavic term for “borderland.”
