Ukrainian forces were on patrol in the Chernihiv region on Saturday after Russia announced this week it would scale down its operations around the capital Kyiv and in the neighbouring northern region of Chernihiv to focus on battles in the east.

The Ukrainian troops received a warm welcome from local residents as they drove on armoured vehicles into areas until recently occupied by the Russians.

Ukraine says its troops have retaken control of more than 30 towns and villages in the Kyiv region since the withdrawal started and accused Russian soldiers of deliberately mining areas in northern Ukraine.

Russia's defence ministry did not reply to a request for comment on the allegations of mine laying and Reuters could not independently verify them.
