Uzhhorod from bird's eye view: Capital of Zakarpattia region

Uzhhorod is a city in western Ukraine on the Uzh River which is the capital of Zakarpattia region. It is a major economic and cultural center of the Carpathian Mountains region. Its name means ‘city (horod) on the Uzh.’

According to the archeological evidence the site was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. A Slavic tribe of White Croatians founded a fortified settlement there in the 8th or 9th century.

Today the city is an industrial and communications center. A hydroelectric power station provides energy to run the industries. Tourism plays an important role in the local economy.

Medieval Uzhhorod Castle is home to the Museum of Regional History, with artifacts from the 14th–20th centuries including coins and weapons. The open-air Museum of Folk Architecture and Life features reconstructed traditional buildings with folk art.
