Wawel Castle
A Gothic castle. Was built at the behest of Casimir III the Great, who reigned from 1333 to 1370, and consists of a number of structures situated around the central courtyard.
Main Square
The principal urban space located at the center of the city. It dates back to the 13th century, and at roughly 40,000 m2 (430,000 ft2) is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe.
St. Mary's Basilica
A Brick Gothic church re-built in the 14th century (originally built in the early 13th century). On every hour, a trumpet signal—called the Hejnał mariacki—is played from the top of the taller of St. Mary's two towers.
Wieliczka Salt Mine
A mine built in the 13th century. One of the world's oldest salt mines still in operation. The mine's attractions include dozens of statues and four chapels that have been carved out of the rock salt by the miners.
Planty Park
One of the largest city parks. Encircles the Stare Miasto (Old Town), where the Medieval city walls used to stand until the early 19th century. Consists of a chain of thirty smaller gardens designed in varied styles.
Ojców National Park
A national park established in 1956. Takes its name from the village of Ojców, where it also has its headquarters. Chopin visited Ojców in 1829. It is Poland's smallest national park, with an original area of 14.40 square kilometers.
Kościuszko Mound
An artificial mound modeled after Kraków's prehistoric mounds of Krak and Wanda. Erected by Cracovians in commemoration of the Polish national leader Tadeusz Kościuszko. A serpentine path leads to the top, approx. 326 metres above sea level.
Polish Aviation Museum
A large museum of old aircraft and aircraft engines. This airfield, established by Austria-Hungary in 1912, is one of the oldest in the world. Has been scored as eighth world's best aviation museum by CNN television.
Kraków Barbican
A barbican – a fortified outpost once connected to the city walls. A gateway leading into the Old Town. One of the few remaining relics of the complex network of fortifications and defensive barriers that once encircled the royal city.
Botanic Garden of the Jagiellonian University
A botanical garden, founded in 1783. Located east of the Old Town (Stare Miasto) and occupies 9.6 hectares. Belongs to the Jagiellonian University and is classified as a historical location.
