I invite you for a walk around Gniezno in 4K
Gniezno is one of the oldest cities in Poland and its first capital. There are few places that can boast such a rich history as this small town from Greater Poland. In the minds of Poles, it is inseparable from the beginning of our state.
The first traces of people living in the area of present-day Greater Poland come from almost 10,000 years ago. To make it sound smarter, I will add that it was the end of the Paleolithic. The first buildings found were built in the 7th century and they were large settlements of tribes called Polans.
Soon after the missionaries came the Germanic Christians and the heathen conversion began. There were no more conversations and stories about a peace-loving God, but instead there appeared iron and fire. Slavic crusades lasted over 250 years. Old Gods were replaced with new ones, old beliefs and holidays were transformed and renamed. Today it is difficult to say what crimes were committed because, as we know, history is written by the winners. The latter decided that Poland began after the baptism of Mieszko I, and let them be, although they regret it.
The above-mentioned baptism took place in Gniezno, and it is the Christian capital of Poland to this day. Even when the city was burnt down by the Czech king Brzetysław in 1038 and the capital was moved to Krakow, some of the later rulers chose Gniezno as the place of their coronation.
