Why Moldova’s Main Airport Is a Mess — and How to Fix It Fast

Chisinau International Airport — the gateway to Moldova — is overwhelmed. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, tens of thousands of Ukrainians have been forced to travel by land each week to catch their international flights from here.

The result? A chaotic, dangerous scene outside the terminal. Buses jam the narrow approach road, women and children are forced to drag their luggage up steep hills with poorly-maintained sidewalks, and there’s no proper staging area to manage the flow of people.

This isn’t Moldova’s fault — it’s a ripple effect of the war next door. But it’s a problem that could be easily fixed. Right next to the main terminal sits an underused VIP terminal with empty parking spaces. Convert that into a proper bus transit area, and suddenly the chaos disappears.

President Maia Sandu, known for flying economy class, wouldn’t lose much — in fact, it would be a smart, populist gesture that puts safety and common sense first.

The elections are over. It’s time for action before an accident happens.
