Algarve Angling Experience on Running Water

In 1992, a company with whom I was associated with at the time, produced a couple of professionally made promotional video films to help promote angling holidays in the wonderful Algarve region of southern Portugal.

I have decided to make these available for public viewing because the films, narrated by the charismatic Keith Arthur in his very own inimitable style, not only feature some really great anglers but also some great guys that are, sadly, no longer with us.

In this video, made in 1992, Keith Arthur and pals, including the then current World Champion, Bob Nudd, England Team Manager Dick Clegg, Vinnie Smith sample a days pleasure fishing on the fabulously picturesque Guadiana River that in its lower reaches forms the border between Portugal and Spain.

Watch Mark Pollard, at the time better known for his amazing ability on canals and his local River Ouse, who had previously never caught a barbel, put over 100lbs of them in his net. Mark's 'boyish' enthusiasm is proper testament to just how enjoyable a days fishing with absolutely nothing at stake can be.

Since this film was made the angling opportunities in the Algarve have dramatically improved with the construction of several new huge dams, known as ‘Barragems’.

The only issue, albeit a big one, that still remains and that is actually getting your fishing tackle to Portugal as most airlines have strict luggage restrictions and, whilst they are quite prepared to give a special allowance for you to take golf clubs; skiing equipment and even guns, they do not regard fishing gear as ‘sports equipment’.

This being the case, it would seem that the only way of overcoming this would be to travel by sea/land, perhaps undertaking the 2500 km drive yourself.

However, the good news is that there is a great ex-pat, John Bate, who will organise everything for you, including licenses, tackle, bait and, most importantly, provide you with up to date local knowledge as to the best spots to fish.
He can also take you deep sea fishing where you can have the chance to do battle with some truly amazing fish.

Then from 16 – 37 years old I organised annual summer fishing expeditions to Ireland, finding many places which are now famous. I took my mates sea fishing in my 24 ft boat from Fleetwood, catching tope, cod etc. I lost interest in fishing in Ireland and England – too predictable for me and started fishing in Spain and Portugal. Fell in love with Portugal and moved out over 20 years ago.
