Algarve Angling Experience on Still Water

In 1992, a company with whom I was associated with at the time, produced a couple of professionally made promotional video films to help promote angling holidays in the wonderful Algarve region of southern Portugal.

I have decided to make these available for public viewing because the films, narrated by the charismatic Keith Arthur in his very own inimitable style, not only feature some really great anglers but also some great guys that are, sadly, no longer with us.

This video includes actual footage from a specially arranged friendly match between an England team, assembled by and including Dick Clegg who’s Team had won the World Championships, in Hungary, just six months and Bob Nudd who was the current Individual World Champion.

The films are completely unscripted and bring out the real character of all the guys involved.

It should be remembered that these were made long before the huge growth of commercial, often unfairly referred to as ‘hole in the ground’, fisheries in the UK, which are artificially stocked with huge numbers of carp.

Since these films were made the angling opportunities in the Algarve have dramatically improved with the construction of several new huge dams, known as ‘Barragems’.

The only issue, albeit a big one, that still remains and that is actually getting your fishing tackle to Portugal as most airlines have strict luggage restrictions and, whilst they are quite prepared to give a special allowance for you to take golf clubs; skiing equipment and even guns, they do not regard fishing gear as ‘sports equipment’.

This being the case, it would seem that the only way of overcoming this would be to travel by sea/land, perhaps undertaking the 2500 km drive yourself.

However, the good news is that there is a great ex-pat, John Bate, who will organise everything for you, including licenses, tackle, bait and, most importantly, provide you with up to date local knowledge as to the best spots to fish.

He can also take you deep sea fishing where you can have the chance to do battle with some truly amazing fish.

Then from 16 – 37 years old I organised annual summer fishing expeditions to Ireland, finding many places which are now famous. I took my mates sea fishing in my 24 ft boat from Fleetwood, catching tope, cod etc. I lost interest in fishing in Ireland and England – too predictable for me and started fishing in Spain and Portugal. Fell in love with Portugal and moved out over 20 years ago.

Although this film was made over twenty five years ago, I have used the original master tape and had it professionally converted to give the best possible quality.
