Effective today, Portugal is welcoming back travelers from the United States as Europe continues to gradually reopen this summer. According to U. S. Embassy and Consulate in Portugal, “beginning June 15, non-essential (i. e. tourist travel) from the United States to mainland Portugal is permitted for travelers with proof of a negative COVID-19 test. ”Children two years old and younger are exempt and do not need to take a pre-test. Everyone else “must submit a negative SARSCoV-2 lab result of a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), for example a PCR test, performed in the last 72 hours or a rapid antigen test (TRAg), performed within 24 hours of boarding. ”You can read all the fine print and find more information about the testing requirements here. As of now, there are no specific instructions or exemptions for vaccinated travelers, although the announcement does make a point to say that the policies will be re-evaluated and restated every two weeks, and just last week, the Portuguese government made it clear that a program for vaccinated travelers is in the works. So, it’s likely that we’ll see another update before too long, one that includes a vaccince passport program. Regardless, it’s now safe to stop dreaming - and start planning - a European getaway.
