O Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas (Phalacrocorax carbo) pertence à família Phalacrocoracidae. Mede entre 77 cm a 94 cm de comprimento e 121 cm a 149 cm de envergadura. Na plumagem de ambos os sexos predomina o preto com reflexos azuis e verdes. Tal como o nome indica, possuem branco nas faces. Na plumagem nupcial ostentam a cor branca também na cabeça e nos flancos. Na base da mandíbula inferior a pele é nua e amarela. O bico é comprido e tem a ponta curvada para baixo. As patas têm 4 dedos, unidos por uma membrana. Os juvenis apresentam uma plumagem acastanhada na parte superior e esbranquiçada na parte inferior.
Esta espécie, residente e migradora, pode ser observada no Algarve ao longo de todo o ano. Vive em zonas húmidas e nidifica em colónias. Esta ave aquática, após mergulhar tem por hábito empoleirar-se e abrir as asas, de preferência ao sol, para secarem.
