President of the European Council Charles Michel invited the incoming US President Joe Biden to discuss a new transatlantic agenda during a debate session in Brussels on Wednesday.

"This new agenda for Europe and the United States that we want to put on the table is an ambitious one. That is why, on this first day of his term of office, I am inviting President Biden to visit Europe to take part in an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in Brussels, to be held in parallel with a NATO summit," Michel announced.

"You see, we are ready, we want to be together, we want to be mobilised to work together with the United States to build a new founding pact for a strong Europe, for a stronger United States and for a better world," he added.

On US President's Inauguration Day, Michel hopes to reassert the strategic importance of the European Union with the United States, sharing "values, common interests, cultural and historical ties, and a geopolitical reality," as he stressed to the Members of the European Parliament.

"Together, we must stand as the bedrock of the rules-based international order, working for peace, security, prosperity, freedom, human rights and gender equality," Michel stated.
