"Something I did not expect to see today was a turtle explode!"

Today we went out on our research vessel 'Ketos' in the morning and we recieved a radio call about a deceased Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta).
On arrival we noticed the animal was very bloated from the build up of natural gases through decomposition, accelerated by the heat of the sun. After a few minutes, the shell (carapace) ruptured, expelling its internal organs!
We took some biopsy samples from the front flipper to be used for further research. While doing so, we noticed a piece of plastic between the organs that we suspect split through the side of the intestine when the organs were expelled. Unfortunately, it is likely this individual contains much more plastic that we could not see.
This species is listed as vulnerable worldwide by the IUCN.
