To explore south we recommend Alentejo area as a starting point which is full of nice beaches.

Porto Covo is an ideal place to stay: authentic, full of nice local restaurants, while not being as busy and touristy as Albufeira for example (which seems to be a heaven only if you're a fan of dirty, smelly British pubs).

The region of Alentejo is really charming, affordable and peaceful.

All of the beaches we've seen were clean with crystal clear, but really chilly water.
