Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second most populous city of Spain, with over 1.6 million people within the city limits. The metropolitan region is home to more than 4.7 million people. It is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea.

The city contains sixty municipal parks, the largest being Montjuïc, located on the mountain of the same name, followed by Parc de la Ciutadella.

Barcelona has a long sporting tradition and hosted the highly successful 1992 Summer Olympics. FC Barcelona is a sports club best known worldwide for its football team, one of the largest and richest in the world.

Barcelona is a major sea, air and rail transport hub. It's port is one of Europe's principal seaports and busiest European passenger port.

It's economic, trade fair and cultural centers, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities.
