The most famous monument of ancient Rome, the Colosseum was the gigantic sports arena built by Vespasian and Titus. The arena was designed to hold more than 50000 spectators and has a circumference of 1720 feet (almost 6 football fields). Designed by order of the Flavian emperor Vespasian in 72 AD, the Colosseum was inaugurated by Titus in 100 AD with a program of games and shows lasting 100 days. On the opening day alone 5000 wild beasts perished.
