Astorga, Spain En 1886, D. Juan Bautista Grau, natural de Reus, toma posesión de la diócesis de Astorga, residiendo en el antiguo palacio episcopal, sito entre la muralla y la catedral. El 23 de diciembre se incendia el robusto edificio, quedando totalmente arrasado, lo que obliga al prelado a vivir en el Seminario Diocesano. El Obispo se reúne con la Junta Diocesana de Construcción, para solicitar ayuda y recursos al Sr. Alcalde (Sr. Pineda), el cual consideró más viable y eficaz acudir al Ministerio de Gracia y Justicia. Se envía el proyecto y presupuesto, realizado por el maestro de Obras y Mayordomo de la Catedral, D. Pedro García Calvo, pues en este momento la plaza de arquitecto diocesano se hallaba vacante. El Ministerio rechaza la propuesta por considerar que el Maestro de Obras carece de "suficiente inteligencia" para realizar el proyecto. El Obispo Grau propone entonces a su paisano Antonio Gaudí, a quien el Ministerio autoriza el 8 de Marzo de 1887 para hacer el proyecto de reedificación del Palacio Episcopal de la Diócesis Asturciense. Desde Barcelona, Gaudí pone manos a la obra y en junio firma los 11 planos, la memoria, el pliego de condiciones facultativas, mediciones, cubicaciones y el presupuesto, cuyo total asciende a 179.726 pts. El prelado recibe el proyecto, calificándolo de Magnífico, lo envía al Ministerio y éste, a su vez, a la Real Academia de San Fernando, para su aprobación.
