Lisbon has a population of 2.660.800 (2001), and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area in total has around 4.600.000 inhabitants (2001) concentrating in its area and sorroundings almost half of the portuguese population. Lisbon region is the wealthiest region in Portugal and it is well above the European Union's per capita GDP average.
