The East Side Gallery is one of the last remains of the Berlin Wall that is still at its historical place. Between 1961 and 1989 this was an inside section of the Berlin Wall. At this location the River Spree was the actual Grenzmauer. The East Side Gallery was created in 1990 with paintings by artists from all over the World. It tells the story of Berlin and Germany's history. Two-thirds of the paintings are badly damaged by erosion, graffiti and vandalism. One-third has been restored by a non-profit organization which started work in 2000. A second restoration will try to restore all artworks along the full length. Organizers hope to have the project completed in 2009 for the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Wall on November 9, 1989. It can not be spoken of a restoration, because the original images with hot water will be completely removed. Afterwards, the artists paint pictures again. Many of the artists refuse to. They wanted their original images rather restore or create new images.
